CompTIA Security+ Zero Trust Architecture: What the Exam Tests

Updated March 21, 2026·6

Anyone researching Security+ zero trust eventually runs into the same question: what does Security+ actually demand? CompTIA's current Security+ exam is SY0-701, launched on November 7, 2023. It is a single-exam certification priced at $425, capped at maximum of 90 questions, timed at 90 minutes, and scored on a 100–900 scale with 750 required to pass.

What zero trust means on Security+

Zero trust is a security model built on the principle of continuous verification — no implicit trust is granted based on network location, device, or prior authentication alone. Every access request is evaluated against identity, device posture, and context before being granted.

On SY0-701, zero trust appears in Security Architecture (18%) and Security Operations (28%). The exam tests whether you understand the difference between traditional perimeter-based security (trust inside, restrict outside) and zero trust (verify everything, assume breach).

Key zero trust concepts

Microsegmentation limits lateral movement by segmenting networks into small zones with independent access controls. Least privilege access ensures users and systems receive only the access required for their current task. Continuous monitoring validates that access remains appropriate throughout a session. Conditional access evaluates context — device compliance, location, risk score — before granting access.
