CompTIA Security+ vs CompTIA CASP+: Understanding the Certification Ladder

Updated March 21, 2026·6

Security+ is broad, vendor-neutral, and tied to real exam constraints. The current CompTIA exam is SY0-701. It costs $425, allows maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes, and requires 750 on a scale of 100-900 to pass.

Security+ vs CASP+

Security+ is entry-to-intermediate level. CASP+ (CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner) is an advanced-level certification targeting senior security engineers and architects. CASP+ assumes extensive experience and does not have a multiple-choice-only format — it uses performance-based questions throughout.

The typical ladder is Security+ first, then specialization (CySA+, PenTest+, or domain-specific credentials), then CASP+ for senior technical leadership roles. Security+ is the foundation, not a replacement for CASP+.

Job market context

BLS reports a median annual wage of $124,910 for information security analysts and projects 28.5% growth from 2024 to 2034. Security+ aligns with the entry point of this market. CASP+ aligns with the senior practitioner tier. Both have value; the question is sequence.
